Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not one-size-fits-all, and ordering wrong costs you a return trip. The part you need depends on your liner diameter and whether your system is DuraFlex SW (stainless wall) or the heavier-gauge DuraFlex HT for high-temperature applications. Check the stamped collar on your existing termination, usually found on the vertical riser just below the crown cap. SW systems run 3″ to 8″ diameter; HT tops out at 6″. The critical measurement is the outer diameter of your flue liner, not the inner opening. We see a lot of Columbia homes in River Hill and Hickory Ridge with 6″ SW systems installed in the late 1990s, and those original crowns are hitting end-of-life now.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water in the firebox after rain. The DuraFlex crown’s primary seal, a compression gasket where the metal riser meets the masonry crown, hardens and cracks after 15-20 years of Maryland freeze-thaw. Once that seal goes, water tracks straight down the flue.
• Rust staining on the exterior chimney face below the crown. DuraFlex uses 304 stainless, but the crown’s galvanized collar and the masonry itself are not stainless. When the crown seal fails, runoff carries rust from those ferrous components down the brick.
• Spalling or flaking on the top course of brick. This is not the crown itself failing, but the consequence. Water that should shed off the crown instead soaks into the brick, and Columbia’s hard winters, with temperatures swinging from 50°F to teens in a day, pop the face off the brick in a season or two.
• Draft problems or smoky fires that started recently. A degraded crown can allow enough water to warp or partially collapse the DuraFlex liner top, changing the flue geometry. Russell Haines has found this exact issue in Kings Contrivance village homes where the liner looked fine from below but was pinched at the termination.
• Visible gaps or tilting of the metal crown cap. The DuraFlex crown is held by a masonry anchor ring and a stainless band clamp. The band loosens over time, especially if the original installer overtightened it and stressed the metal. Once the cap tilts, water sheds toward the flue instead of away from it.
