Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed
Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Famco Chimney Cap Installation: The Columbia Owner’s Guide
We install Famco chimney caps throughout Columbia for $285-$650 installed, depending on flue size, cap style, and whether your existing flue tile needs repair before mounting. Most Famco replacements we book in Howard County are completed in a single visit because we stock the common 8″ × 8″, 8″ × 13″, and 13″ × 13″ galvanized and stainless models on our trucks. You usually discover the cap has failed when water spots appear on the firebox ceiling after a Columbia spring storm, or when a neighbor mentions the rust streaks running down your brick that you had not noticed from the ground.
Which Famco Models This Applies To
Famco manufactures several cap lines, and the right match depends on what is currently on your flue. The Original series uses a flat lid with a single-band mount; the Draft King line adds a skirted edge for better wind deflection; the Windbeater spins with gusts to prevent downdraft. Most Columbia homes built between 1975 and 1995 have the Original or early Draft King in galvanized steel, which starts rusting at the weld seams after 12-15 years in Maryland’s freeze-thaw cycle.
To identify yours: check the stamp on the underside of the lid if you can reach it safely, or measure the outside dimensions of your flue tile. Famco caps are sized to the flue, not the chimney crown. A 9″ × 9″ flue tile takes an 8″ × 8″ cap with overhang. The common mistake we see in Kings Contrivance and Long Reach Village is ordering by chimney crown width and ending up with a cap that perches loose or cannot clamp at all.
We are not affiliated with Famco. We source OEM Famco caps and also carry stainless aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney that match the mounting geometry exactly. For most Columbia homeowners, the stainless aftermarket outlasts galvanized OEM two to one in our climate, and we will show you both options with the price difference plain.
Signs Your Famco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks on the chimney brick below the cap. Galvanized Famco caps lose their zinc coating at the weld points first. Once moisture reaches bare steel, rust runs down the face of your chimney. In Columbia’s humid summers, this accelerates after year ten.
- Water in the firebox or a damp, musty smell after rain. The cap lid may look intact from the ground, but the mesh screen can separate at the frame joint, or the lid itself can warp from heat cycling. Either gap lets water follow the flue straight down.
- Debris or bird nests in the flue. Famco caps use ¾-inch mesh to block animals while letting smoke escape. When that mesh corrodes or pulls away from the frame, squirrels and starlings treat your flue like a hollow tree. We pulled a nest the size of a football bag from a River Hill cap last October.
- Downdraft smoke pouring into the room on windy days. The Draft King and Windbeater caps are engineered to deflect wind. If the lid is bent or the spinning turbine seizes, the cap becomes a scoop instead of a shield. Columbia’s exposed ridge-line homes in Hobbit’s Glen catch the worst of this.
- The cap is missing entirely after a storm. Single-band mounts on older Original caps can fatigue. We find them in flower beds more often than you would expect, usually after the first November nor’easter when the metal is cold-brittle.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
| Service | Price Range |
|---|---|
| Famco-compatible cap, standard galvanized, installed | $285-$375 |
| Famco-compatible cap, 304 stainless, installed | $395-$495 |
| Famco Windbeater or Draft King, stainless, installed | $485-$650 |
| Flue tile repair or crown leveling (if needed) | $125-$280 |
What drives the range: flue height above the roofline, whether we need a ladder or full scaffolding setup, and the condition of the flue tile itself. We do not mount a new cap on cracked tile. The price we quote is the price on the invoice. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. If water gets past our cap, we come back.
DIY or Call Us?
There is one thing you can check safely from inside: shine a flashlight up the flue and look for daylight. If you see sky, your cap is damaged or missing. That is as far as we recommend going yourself.
Roof work around a chimney is where DIY goes wrong. Steep pitches, brittle composite shingles common in Columbia’s 1980s builds, and the drop to hardscaping below make this a genuine fall risk. Beyond that, a cap seated crooked gaps at the clamp band. A cap over-tightened cracks the flue tile. We have re-done enough homeowner installs in Wilde Lake to know the savings evaporate fast.
We carry Famco-compatible caps on the truck, and most Columbia replacements are done in under 90 minutes. Call (443) 899-1174 and we will give you a straight price before we drive.
FAQs
Galvanized Famco caps last 10-15 years in Howard County’s climate before weld-seam rust becomes structural. Stainless models routinely reach 20-25 years. The difference is real money over the life of your home. Call (443) 899-1174 for an exact quote on either option.
Mesh re-welding and lid-straightening are possible, but rarely worth the labor cost compared to a new cap that carries a warranty. We will show you the photo and tell you straight if repair makes sense. Estimates are free.
Most Famco cap replacements take 45 to 90 minutes from ladder set to cleanup. If flue tile repair is needed, add 30-60 minutes. We complete most jobs in a single visit because we stock the parts.
We stock the common Famco sizes and equivalents on our trucks. Odd sizes or custom copper finishes ship in 3-5 business days. We will tell you which category yours falls into when you call.
If it drafts right, it burns right - everything else is just details we handle before you light the first fire of the season.
